VIVUS' research and development programs focus on identification and development of new or existing compounds to treat obesity, diabetes, sleep apnea, and male or female sexual function.

VIVUS' lead obesity investigational compound, Qnexa®, is a promising next-generation therapeutic that has demonstrated the ability to induce significant weight loss commensurate with positive effects on obesity-related comorbidities such as hypertension, elevated lipids and triglycerides, or increased blood sugar. The most common adverse events seen in clinical trials were dry mouth, constipation, upper respiratory tract infection, headache, and altered taste.

VIVUS continues to develop therapeutics to enhance or restore male sexual function. Avanafil is a promising PDE5 inhibitor under development for erectile dysfunction.
